Small business owners in the Sunset are doing all they can to continue to serve the community. To build awareness of these efforts, Supervisor Gordon Mar’s office has teamed with small businesses to create a new campaign: #SunsetStrong. #SunsetStrong is a resource for our community to discover how we can support each other. Browse the neighborhood businesses on this site and shop locally. We’re in this together.

面對新冠的難關，日落區的小商舖仍竭力為社區服務。為了提高民眾對這些努力的了解，第四區市參事馬兆明辦公室正與小商舖合作，共同製作了一個新的宣傳系列：#日落濃情（#SunsetStrong）。#日落濃情，是我們社區發之間發掘相互支持的渠道。這個活動的目的是鼓勵市民來日落區進行本地購物，在這個非常時期共同渡過難關。

Our new mascot has rolled down the avenues to greet you all, so you know what that means 🛻...

TOMORROW FEB 2, we’re opening our doors at New Noriega (@ 44th Ave) for service!

Hours:
7 AM - 8 AM (seniors)
8 AM - 9:30 PM

This also means Noriega Produce down the street will be closing its doors for the last time today. While it’s a bittersweet closing of one chapter, we are so excited for you all to visit this new location and explore all the additions: full service meat/seafood, deli, all-day cafe, ramen + poke bar, cheese counter, expanded wine/beer, and more!

One of the places I cherish the most in the Inner Sunset is Arizmendi Bakery. With its artisan breads and thin crust pizzas, Arizmendi is everyone’s favorite neighborhood bakery. This will be obvious once you get there and you see the line to order stretching half a block but the wait is worth it once you dig into a freshly baked bialy or a blueberry crumb cake. What isn’t obvious is that Arizmendi Bakery is a cooperative business. To find out more about what that means for the employees who work there, I talked to one of their bakers, Aeri Swanson. “In short, it means we all own and operate the bakery together, as equals. We make decisions collectively, at our monthly general meetings. The same person you see working the register, could also be the same person who baked the baguettes that morning, ordered all the flour for the week and takes care of bookkeeping.”. It all started in 1997 when the popular Berkeley pizza spot, Cheeseboard, another cooperative business, opened a bakery: Arizmendi in Oakland. This bakery was such a hit they opened another location in the Inner Sunset.

Along with influences and recipes from the Arizmendi in Oakland and Cheeseboard, Arizmendi in San Francisco makes their own recipes from the creativity of each individual employee. “One of the fun things about being a cooperative, is that inspiration can strike at any time! Panettone, Tres Leches, Whoopie Pies, Pop Tarts, these are just some of the products that individual baker/owners took interest in. People will make small batches to share with others, and then a "test kitchen" status happens, where the product is scaled up to ensure it works in larger amounts and the recipe re-worked.” Aeri explains.

Things haven't changed much at Inner Sunset staple @theyellowsubmarinesf, which has been serving quality sandwiches since 1971. Juliet Naser took over The Yellow Submarine in 1975, and today, she can still be seen helping make sandwiches and serving customers with her son Jack, the current owner.

When you walk in to the small space to order, you will hear sounds of an endlessly-ringing telephone (for phone-in orders) and a spatula chopping steak on the grill. The shop's original menu from 1971 can still be seen painted on the wall in the dining area (that area is currently closed during the pandemic).

In an interview with @hoodline, Jack Naser said that the key to his family’s long-lived success is “quality ingredients, honesty in the preparation. You‘re not going to stay in business trying to fool the customer. We try to buy the best quality within our price point. Give the customer an honest sandwich at good value.“

Any of the sandwiches are good, and Naser for example hand selects all the cuts of pastrami to ensure the best quality. Each of Yellow Submarine's sandwich loaves are baked exclusively for them from a secret recipe, with a texture that is soft and doughy with a toasted exterior. And they won't share their great secret hot sauce recipe, which is included on their sandwiches.
